Matt Cavanaugh
Managing Partner & Director of Investments
Matt Cavanaugh is a Managing Partner of XXI Wealth and the firm’s Director of Investments, bringing more than two decades of experience across capital markets and the business of sports. He advises individuals and families: entrepreneurs, executives, athletes, entertainers. He leads how their portfolios are built and managed: position by position, in individual securities, with each client’s tax picture and the rest of their plan in view the whole way.
Prior to co-founding XXI Wealth, Matt served as a Managing Director in the sports division of a national wealth-management firm, where he advised on investment management, manager selection, and private-market opportunities. Earlier in his career he helped build the derivatives business of a high-speed trading firm, and before that co-founded a privately held Chicago trading firm, serving as senior partner, head trader, and director of portfolio management, trading equities, interest-rate products, commodities, options, and futures on exchanges including the CBOE and CME.
Matt’s background spans public and private markets. He has led diligence on opportunities from seed-stage companies to managed real estate and sector-focused funds: close work that comes down to looking past the pitch to the operators and numbers underneath. He spent years on the CBOE’s media team, a steady run of television and radio segments, shows, and interviews across the financial press. He holds a degree in Economics from the University of Oregon.
Matt grew up around sports and the business side of athletics: an early education in the discipline, preparation, and resilience that careers in both are built on. It has been his own throughline ever since. As an advisor and investor, he has partnered with executives in consumer, health, and technology companies to bring sports and entertainment figures into their brands and growth strategies: work that lives where markets, business, and sport meet, aligning capital and opportunity with where his clients are headed.
